Aerogardens are great in-house hydroponic systems built for convenience. The Aerogarden kits come complete with pumps, lights, and housing systems for the water needed to grow your plants as well as a basic seed starter kit.

The basic idea is that you just insert the seed pods, fill up the reservoir with water, put in plant food every 2 weeks, and you’ll get results quick.

If you want to get started with hydroponic gardening, or just want to grow herbs inside the house with relative ease, Aerogardens are one of the best ways to do so since it’s so easy. The downsides are that they are a bit pricey, but making a decent hydroponic DIY kit on your own will take around $100 anyway.

Aerogardens do have various models, and for a beginner, it can be hard to decide which to choose–so in this guide, I’ll give a good breakdown of the various models and the differences between them.

#1 Aerogarden Miracle-Gro Ultra $199 (7 plants)

Which Aerogarden Should I Get?

If you don’t want to waste time with a small little Aerogarden, then this model is the perfect one for you. This Aerogarden comes with an actual LCD control panel that utilizes prompts to guide you through your harvest.

The LCD Screen shows you the time, how many days the plant has been growing, and when to add nutrients. You can even control the growth mode, grow 7 pods at once, and the model includes 3 high-performance grow lights. This is the ideal model if you want to grow some serious veggies like tomatoes or peppers.

#2 Aerogarden Miracle-Gro $199 (7 plants)

Which Aerogarden Should I Get?

This model is similar to the previous model, but it has no LCD control panel. I wouldn’t get this model. Strangely enough, it holds the same price point. Instead get the previous model since it has a better LCD control panel for the same price.

It still has a regular control panel that customizes the light and experience depending on which herb, veggie, or flower you are trying to grow. This model has 7 pod placements, and a similar lighting system (but perhaps a bit weaker than the Ultra model).

#3 Aerogarden $60 (3 Plants)

Which Aerogarden Should I Get?

If you want to just get started with Aerogarden without much of a commitment, and you just want to grow a decent selection of herbs, this version is perfect. This version comes with lights, a built-in bubbler, the ability to turn it on/off as well as use the automatic timer, the ability to plant 3 plants, and it can grow most herbs/lettuce.

This is the version I actually started out with and while it does have some limitations like a limited growth height, and the inability to customize the experience based on what you are growing, it’s still perfectly workable with the same fundamental parts.

Growing Plants Indoor Tips: How to Grow Plants Indoors

Many people desire to have green vegetables in their diets today. However, the cost of buying them from the market is too high. Also, most people do not have gardens to grow them from. For this reason, there are ways of growing plants indoors without the sun. If you are considering this option, here is what you need.

Humidity is the amount of moisture in the air. For a plant, the level of humidity will determine the amount of water lost by the plants indoors. If you find out that the air is too dry, place an open bowl of water near the plants. In the case of Aerogardens, the grow dome that comes included is essential in the seedling phase.

Water is needed for indoor plants and should be given in just the right amounts to avoid rotting or drying up the plant. Make sure you Aerogarden is always filled to the line. When the plants get bigger, they will start absorbing more water.

The optimum temperature for plants indoors is between 18 and 23 degrees centigrade. If your indoors go above that, the plants will not grow to be healthy. On the other hand, if they go below it, the plants will start dropping leaves.

The light from the sun is of paramount importance to plants as it is used in the photosynthesis process to manufacture food. Indoors, however, it is difficult to find the particular wavelength of light. This is why Aerogardens come with powerful lights to help grow your plants.

Each plant requires about 10 to 14 hours of sunlight to be healthy. You can have plants on your balcony but even that might be a problem for some. Luckily, there are special lights made to emit the same wavelength of light like the sun. They include;

High-Intensity Discharge Bulbs – these ones emit high-intensity light which is good for plants in their photosynthesis. They are mostly more expensive than other types of lights and suited for plants with high light demands like root plants.

Fluorescent lights – these ones look like the normal fluorescent lights used in most homes but have been created with a unique light being emitted. They are among the cheapest ones for the plants indoors.

Incandescent bulbs – also easy to find, these lights emit lights of differing intensity as per the needs of the plants one has. They are cheaper than even the fluorescent lights hence their popularity making those who have plants in their homes.

The Best Plants for Indoor Conditions

One has to choose the type of plant to have in their homes for the best results. It is more advisable to go for plants whose main focus are the leaves (and not the roots) as they need less sunlight and outdoor conditions. They include:

Although carrots are based on roots, their growth anatomy is quite easy to support indoors. They will also give a great harvest even when indoors especially if you ask for the ones that can perform well indoors.

You can pick on lettuce, endive and cress all of which have easier management routines. Given the right conditions, they can even have yields better than their outdoor counterparts. You can be happy knowing your table will have natural salads from now own.

Peas are another table favorite liked by vegetarians and the rest. It needs very little in terms of the replication of outdoor conditions hence can guarantee a great harvest even indoors. Actually, most homes without an outdoor garden prefer growing peas over other plants.

Mushrooms often grow away from sunlight even in their natural environment. For this reason, they have become some of the easiest to grow indoors. There are many types of mushrooms one can get at the grocery shop to grow in their own homes. They also take up a very small amount of space and time when compared to the other plants on this list.

Broccoli is also a favorite for many home growers owing to its many health benefits. It performs very well even in indoor conditions without any loss of taste or size of the harvest. In fact, broccoli can be exclusively grown indoors since some outdoor conditions may be too harsh for it to thrive.

Most other vegetables will perform well indoors. Just make sure you have read their needs in terms of water, temperature, humidity and lighting conditions. Just because they are growing indoors does not mean you treat the plants with too much care. If they can withstand the harsh conditions outdoors, they can thrive indoors. In fact, they will have less difficulty once you give them enough of what they need.
