What is a latex mattress?
A latex mattress is a product whose internals are collected then processed rubber tree sap as opposed to springs or air as you will find in most other types of mattresses. These mattresses have been on the market for many years and are considered great for back pain, durability, and comfort.
There are three types of latex mattresses:
- synthetic/man-made, and
Are all latex mattresses created equal?
The straight answer here is NO! You will come across many mattresses labeled “Latex mattresses,” but they are not the same as the creation process differs.
Latex mattresses are either made of natural latex that comes from the rubber tree, 100%, or of synthetic latex that’s made from petrochemicals, which is a mixture of natural latex and synthetic. AKA “blend” of latex.
This info is most relevant for people who not only need great comfort and support from their mattresses but also need one with all natural properties as you will feel cheated if you ended up with one made of chemicals.
Both the synthetic and natural latex mattresses may look the same, but they definitely feel different, and there’re claims of different durability. There is also a huge difference on how the specific latex was manufactured (either through the Dunlop method or the Talalay method) and how that affects the final product.
Just to give you a summary of the two methods, the Dunlop method is the oldest; thus most time-tested and it yields a slightly firmer and more supportive natural latex. Talalay method is the newest technique, and it yields a less supportive and slightly softer feel latex. I am only stating the basics here so if it interests you, you can look for more information on the same.
As I was doing my research, I learned that natural latex that’s made through the Dunlop method feels firmer and is more buoyant than Talalay latex.
However, you can rip the best from the two worlds by making a combo mattress using a Talalay top layer for that soft, luxurious feel and a Dunlop core for that good support and comfort.
The real benefits of a natural latex mattress
Most people are in search of a “green” mattress option. Well, natural latex wins easily because it offers the most buoyancy and elasticity characteristics. You can thus roll side to back or belly to side easily, and this prevents any disruptions on your sleep patterns.
Thus, if you are looking for a uniquely comfortable sleeping surface, a natural latex mattress might be all you need. Also, due to its unparalleled support and comfort, natural latex mattress makes a good alternative for those dealing with unrelieved pain issues or those who just can’t seem to get any good night’s sleep.
Natural latex also has some great qualities such as anti-bacterial, hypo-allergenic and anti-dust mite as these organisms cannot thrive in natural latex as it has unique organic properties. It also makes a perfect choice for people with allergy concerns or chemical sensitivities. Again, natural latex does not sleep hot. It is also more durable and resists forming body impressions and packing down as well.
Why do most manufacturers prefer the synthetic latex?
First, most people just know that latex mattresses are great because they are so hyped and considered “hot,” but only a few dig the details that make a latex mattress what it is. I’d say that most manufacturers take advantage of this amidst the claim that synthetic latex is more resilient.
On the real though, the only tangible difference between natural and synthetic latex is the cost. Synthetic latex is less expensive hence why manufacturers would rather make a mattress from synthetic latex or blend with some natural latex.
Natural latex mattress wins for me anytime. It harbors many benefits in terms of comfort, eco-friendly and hypo-allergenic properties. However, based on your needs and budget, you can get any because the synthetic latex mattresses or the blend are also great.
The question is, which mattresses should you buy? I prefer shopping for mattresses on Amazon since they are very affordable, and you can make use of Amazon’s great return policy. If you want to return it, just contact the manufacturer through Amazon, and they’ll send a courier to come pick it up and donate the mattress.
Top 5 Latex Mattresses
If you’re more on a budget, but still want a good memory foam / latex hybrid mattress, this is a good option. The bed has all sizes available with a 10 inch depth. The memory foam has bamboo charcoal elements with a breathable TENCEL blend cover, and the box is very easy to unload and setup.
Users who love the mattress find that it feels more cool than memory foam, and that it holds up well, even if its a bit soft. The bed should be well suited for back or side sleepers, and it has very positive reviews for such a low entry price point.
If you want something a bit more comfy, or perhaps long-lasting, then this bed is a good mid-price option. It’s still a hybrid type bed with a high density base foam, but it uses latex for a majority of the mattress which means its super hypoallergenic to prevent allergies (this is often one reason people buy new beds). One interesting feature about this bed is that you can customize how firm it is once you purchase it.
Reviews are super strong for this mattress as well on Amazon, at nearly 5 stars, but it seems like most of the people who like the mattress are people who like a firm mattress–or perhaps got the wrong firmness. If you like very firm go for #1 firmness, or if you like soft, go for #4. If you’re not one of those, perhaps check out some memory foam mattresses.
This is an upper-tier mattress made out of 100% latex foam. There is no other foam blends within this mattress and it offers some awesome firm support. While it doesn’t have many reviews, some of the company’s mattress toppers are some of the most-sold products on Amazon, so you know they are reputable and know how to make latex. This goes perfect with one of their latex mattress toppers.
If you want a mattress that will last you for 10 years plus, and have all of the benefits of a 100% latex feel, then this is a good choice. It’s a bit pricey compared to “budget” options, but in this case–you get what you pay for (quality lasting materials).
The mattress is built to last, with features like natural wool as a fire barrier, two alternate sides to make it easily last for years (you can use one side for more firmness, or the other side for less). The mattress uses latex harvested from the Hevea Brasiliensis tree, which means that it contains no chemicals. Reviews are SUPER good for this mattress with a 94% 5 star rating which is very good.
What features should you check on a latex mattress before purchasing?
When shopping for a latex mattress, there are several important considerations that you should give priority to ensuring that you get only the best. Here is what I would recommend:
Go for an all-natural latex mattress over blended or synthetic latex mattress
As I noted before, the natural latex mattress is the best, all factors considered. They are more responsive, livelier, and have more elastic characteristics than blended or synthetic mattresses. They also feel more comfortable and provide the best support. Again, natural latex resists forming body impressions and packing down, and it is also durable.
Also, with natural latex, you also get other advantages that lack in synthetic latex such as anti-mildew and anti-mold qualities, anti-dust mite, it is chemical free and has hypo-allergenic qualities.
Look for certifications
The only way to know if the latex mattress is of good quality is through the certifications. They indicate that the particular mattress adheres to the specified international standards or that it has passed the set stringent tests. Also, certifications are given to show how the mattress was manufactured.
What makes certifications reliable is the fact that the certifying bodies set the required standards and are very strict with how you earn the certification and wouldn’t want to jeopardize themselves by awarding certifications to low-quality latex mattresses.
One layer or multi-layer latex mattress?
Latex mattresses are either in one block/layer, two layers or more. However, before unzipping them, they all look like a block because they are usually enclosed in a removable cover.
Multi-layer latex mattresses have more benefits compared to single layer ones because; one, you get personalized comfort. This is possible because the different layers have different levels of firmness and softness and can be stacked in a way that gives you the level of comfort you need. Mostly, you will find the softer layer on top and the firm layer at the bottom but if you prefer it the other way you’re free to unstack and restack as you wish.
Again, if along the way anything happens, that requires you to change your sleeping position or any other lifestyle change, a multi-layer latex mattress allows you to change any of the layers to get the desired level of firmness. This proves easier and cheaper than having to replace the entire mattress.
However, despite the benefits that come with a multi-layer mattress, the decision between the two is best made once you try out the two mattresses. There is no definite answer on which is better.
Latex mattresses’ firmness levels range from very firm to very soft. The difference in firmness is because different people have different needs when it comes to mattresses. However, most people confuse firmness and hardness, and thus they end up doing the wrong test. For mattresses, firmness levels are measured in mass/ unit volume so be keen on this. The best way to test if the mattress has the right firmness for your needs is to lay on it for several days.
How do you know the correct firmness for you?
Different people have different sleeping habits. Thus, you are likely to hear people say that this is the best latex mattress for side sleepers or best for back sleepers and so on. However, the easiest way to know the best firmness for your mattress is by identifying these factors:
What’s your sleeping position (s)?
You might be a back, stomach or side sleeper. Some people even sleep in all the three positions.
What’s your weight?
As I mentioned above, latex mattresses firmness is calculated in terms of mass per unit volume. Thus, your weight plays a big role in picking the mattress’ firmness. If your weight is not in line with the firmness, the likely result is improper alignment and this result to discomfort.
What’s your comfort preference?
You might be surprised to find out that what most people prefer as the right firmness for a comfortable sleep is not what you would go for. Studies too might give different information, but you should just go for what you feel is best for you.
People forget about their height when searching a mattress with the right firmness level. Higher profile height means that the latex will distribute the weight through more material. Hence, when sharing the bed with someone else, this becomes vital as the latex will provide a perfect support to them.
NOTE: ILD is the abbreviation for Indentation Load Deflection referring to latex firmness. The range is 14-22 for a soft latex mattress, 23-29 for medium and 30-37 for the firm. Some people prefer extra firm mattresses, and ILDs of 38 fits the category perfectly. However, most people go for an ILD of 25-35 thus falling either in medium and firm.
Avoid latex mattresses with “cut up” designs or excessive zones
A simple and uncomplicated latex mattress design helps you avoid such issues as “migration” of contents or shifting of layers. In short, the simpler the design, the better for the mattress remains in the long run.
If you are looking for a latex mattress with multiple layers, then I would recommend one with Talalay natural latex as the top layer and Dunlop natural latex as the “core.” Dunlop natural latex offers more support thus a good foundation for the other layers while a top layer of Talalay latex gives your mattress a softer and luxurious feel.
Go for a wool blend without any chemical fire retardants if you need a breathable outer covering.
The cover should, however, be thin, less quilted, so as to keep you in contact with the latex.
Always buy your products from reputable companies
See if you can get one offering several free days of a trial because you don’t want to get stuck with a mattress that does not meet your needs. This is especially important for people who need a latex mattress to help on some issues such as back pains or to see if they can get better sleep.
You should have enough time to try it out and see if it is helpful and if not, you should be allowed to return it and get a different one or money back.
Buy one with a solid warranty and full replacement guarantee for several years.
You only know a product is good if the company/dealer is ready to back it up and the warranty should be easily obtainable.
Enough with the praise. Someone might ask, do latex mattresses have any downfall/cons? And the answer is yes!
They might be the best mattresses, but they are too pricey compared to conventional beds. However, they are cheaper than memory foam mattresses.
It’s not really a downfall considering their quality and the many benefits they offer, but the price might limit those on a tight budget.
They say a good night’s sleep can translate to a more productive human during the day. However, a good sleep does not come easily. You have to invest in a good, high-quality mattress and over the years, latex mattresses have proved to be one the best.
However, with the growing number of manufacturers and dealers, you ought to be careful to ensure that you’re getting exactly what you need and paid for.
Most people have had bad experiences when shopping for latex mattresses, and the only way to avoid such a path is to arm yourself with all the necessary information on the same. I hope this article will be of help in your search. Good luck!
