It’s easy to overlook the basics of web hosting. We often rely too often on familiar signs of a great web host. We look to the most expensive and then the least expensive. We look to those with the best reviews or those that are just simply used the most often. But you need what’s going to fit you and your blog best. What this usually means is finding a host that will host WordPress for Free!

We’ve reviewed and compared many popular and unknown hosts in the past, but for the sake of this tutorial, we’ll show you the process of getting a free domain that supports WordPress using BlueHost. BlueHost not only has a free domain option, but supports WordPress, offers a FREE SSL certificate, and a site-builder!

This overall tutorial will take you from choosing a domain, to payment, all the way to writing that first blog!

BlueHost allows one FREE domain name. Domain names can be up to 65 characters long. We suggest something on the shorter side to increase your SEO.

Start by going to the BlueHost (or whatever other host you choose) home page. Click “getting started.”

The first decision you must make will be to choose which package is best for you. There are 3 choices: BASIC, PLUS, and PRIME.

Basic is easy to recommend. For the casual blogger running only one site, this cheap option is more than enough to cover your “basic” needs.

For anyone with a heavier online presence and more than one site, the PLUS edition has way less restrictions and allows for unlimited website space.

Beyond that, an advanced user needing a dedicated IP and increased privacy needs to look at the PRIME option. It’s secure and still affordable. Anyone looking at the PRIME option should definitely keep an eye out for deals. BlueHost is known for often having sales on their most recommended plan.

This is also the plan we recommend. It allows for the most flexibility. It supports unlimited websites so if you’re hosting a travel blog today, but want to discuss movies next year, you’re free to start that up with the least amount of resistance.

Now, “select” your chosen plan and for how long you’d like to pay (we suggest a longer term of 2-3 years to prevent any price hikes in the future).

Remember Step 1 from all those days ago? Well here’s your time to enter it. Whether it’s new or used, you now have the chance to choose your FREE BlueHost domain name.

After selecting your plan, you can either choose to get a free domain name from Bluehost, or you can use any of your existing domain name.

What if I already have a paid domain name?

No problem! That free domain name from BlueHost will still be there if and when you need it!

Next, click “NEXT.”

In this section, you need to enter your details (name, email address, address, etc.).

This part is easy and most of you will have an autofill for this section. Name. Email. Address. The good stuff. As always, double check your information, making sure that autofill didn’t use your old AIM email from high school (we’re looking at you pinkkitty80082).

A confirmation will be sent to your email.

Here’s where you confirm how long you want your host package. Whether that’s 1, 2, or 3 years is up to you! You’ll see that the longer your plan…the cheaper the per month price becomes!

But, most importantly, you’ll want to make sure you UNCHECK the add-on options. BlueHost is fantastic, but their add-ons like Site Back-Up and Security are not necessary for everyone. So read over what they do carefully before continuing. We want to make sure you’re not overcharged for your web host experience!

You can pay by card OR PayPal.

Make sure to confirm all the previously entered information before proceeding with payment. Once you’re sure that your info is correct, enter your Payment type and numbers (on the BlueHost website, not here…unless you really really like us).

Click “Submit.”

This will take you to a confirmation page. Screenshot this for your records and click on “create your password.”

We’re almost done!!! So sad. We’ll miss you.

Here is where you enter your chosen password. You COULD go with your normal [email protected]$$w0rd, use a password generator, or just hit the keyboard at random. I hear that’s how they wrote Twilight.

STEP 8: USING BLUEHOST or Other Web host Providers

A confirmation email will be sent to your email. Triple check your information before going to

Click “login” in the top right corner. Enter your domain/username and the chosen password. You now have free range over your Bluehost account! Your main menu is called the cPanel. This will be your home base for site creation, alterations, and customer support!

Bluehost support is 24/7, so if there are any questions this article didn’t answer, feel free to ask them!
