When people think of injuries, they mostly think of those that you might get from playing sports. If not that, then from some more or less dangerous hobby or an accident. It is only natural to think so since such activities involve a lot of physical activity, which can more often lead to injuries.

Bodies are getting tired, concentration might slip, and sooner or later, an injury might take place. Anything is possible, from a twisted ankle, over a broken arm or leg, to the more serious injuries. Sometimes, they can even be life threatening.

However, these kinds of injuries are not the only ones that you must watch out for. You can face just as serious problem by doing the exact opposite of having too much activity – which is not having enough. It might sound strange, but too much sitting can cause problems that are even more serious than a broken arm.

Gamers are especially in danger when it comes to this. Especially if they are hardcore gamers that usually spend hours upon hours in front of their computer. The so-called “light gamers”, that play something for an hour or two, but otherwise lead a physically active life don’t have to worry about things like this. However, those who spend the majority of their time in front of the screen, do.

Now, this might sound scary, and it should. However, you don’t have to be afraid if you take proper precautions. In this article, we will now talk about the most common injuries that you can suffer from if you spend too much time sitting.

DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)

This is an issue that can often hit the legs of gamers, and others who sit for the most of their regular days. It is a state where blood doesn’t flow to your legs as much, due to major inactivity. If you feel pain, or if you notice that your legs are swollen, this might be the reason why. This can become a serious problem if you don’t do anything about it.

However, you don’t have to panic. The trick in dealing with this is quite simple, and all you have to do to prevent it is to take a short walk every few hours. That way, your legs will get their fair share of activity as well, and you will reduce the chance of this problem affecting your health.

Neck injuries

Neck injuries are another common issue that gamers might face on regular basis. Similarly to DVT, your neck probably doesn’t get a lot of activity during hours and hours of sitting in front of the computer. It is almost constantly in the same position, which makes it go stiff. Eventually, you will start feeling pain, and stiffness will remain.

You can deal with this issue just as easily as you did with the previous one. In fact, you can take care of them both at the same time. The earlier mentioned walk will take care of your entire body, and make sure that the blood flows properly through each part. Additionally, you may want to include some light exercises. A bit of stretching from time to time can go a long way, and do much good for your body, and you won’t even feel it.

Back injuries

Back problems are something that every hardcore gamer can’t avoid unless they change their habits. We were all told to sit straight as kids, but that is not something that you can apply during hours of gaming every single day. Such bad posture leads to back pain, especially later in life, when you arrive at some older years, where even the healthiest people will start feeling different issues.

So, what can you do to prevent this problem?

Well, there are several methods, but some of them may be a bit difficult for some people. The first and easiest one may include more physical activity, like the previous solutions. Some stretching and light exercises before and after gaming will do your body a lot of good.

You can even try doing them during the gaming session, just for a couple of minutes. I would recommend trying to touch your toes while standing up and bending over, multiple times a day. Another good exercise is to hold a deep squat for a minute for a few times throughout the day. Additionally, you should take a few walks throughout the day to stretch out muscles and your hips. A dog helps with this tremendously (I speak from experience).

Next solutions are a bit trickier. You can try to train yourself to sit straight and have a good posture. This will require some serious dedication and effort, but it is possible. Back braces are also a possibility if you are willing to use them. Then, there are standing desks, which are probably the best solution. However, they are not for everyone.

Finally, you can try with special chairs, specially designed to combat this problem. The majority of gamers sit on chairs that are not meant to serve that purpose, and they are slowly destroying their back. If you want a proper gaming chair, we suggest trying out a Triigger chair, from the Vertagear chair family. You should check it out, and definitely consider it. Some getting used to might be required. However, you will learn to sit in it quite soon, and everything will return to normal.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

This is another issue that gamers are facing on regular basis, which is basically a damage in your wrist. While you play your favorite game, no matter if it is on the computer, with a mouse and keyboard, or with a joypad/joystick, you will make some pretty repetitive movements. Not to mention that your hands and arms will remain in the same, stiff position for hours.

Because of this, you can start experiencing pain, tingling, or strain in your wrists. The entire experience is not at all pleasant. However, you can also prevent it quite easily by stretching and exercising for a bit. Remember, for a gamer, hands and wrists are the most important. Because of that, you must take good care of them.

Many people are afraid of sports because it can cause serious injuries. However, they often forget that sitting can be just as bad, especially if you do it for a long period of time. Gaming is especially bad for your body, and hardcore gamers will start feeling the issues very soon if they don’t take precautions.

The majority of the problems that too much sitting can cause are easily dealt with, and all it takes is half an hour in your day. Simply go for a walk, and do some light exercises, and you will combat the effects of too much sitting easily.

Alternatively, the special equipment like back braces, standing desks, or Vertagear Triigger chair are also an option. Take care of your body through these easy methods, and enjoy gaming for years and years longer.
